When it’s time to say goodbye: Tooth extractions

when-its-time-to-say-goodbye-tooth-extractions

From tying a string between a tooth and a doorknob and then slamming the door to playing an exceptionally violent game of hockey, people may not have a clear understanding of a tooth extraction. Too often, people imagine tooth extractions to be painful and traumatizing. In reality, tooth extractions will not cause half as much pain as the patient will feel if the tooth is left alone. There is one type of tooth extraction people experience that few enjoy: wisdom teeth removal.

Not as bad as you think

There are multiple reasons for tooth extractions. Mouthhealthy.org explains that “An extraction means to have a tooth removed, usually because of disease, trauma or crowding.” Tooth extractions have a reputation for being painful due to the soreness that follows an extraction procedure.

However, patients have nothing to worry about since “If you need an extraction, your dentist will first numb the area to lessen any discomfort,” mouthhealthy.org states. Depending on the location, root and quality of the tooth, the dentist may use a larger amount of anesthesia to numb the area or put the patient under.

Following tooth extractions, mouthhealthy.org recommends that patients:

  • Avoid anything that might prevent normal healing
  • Don’t smoke or rinse your mouth vigorously
  • Avoid drinking through a straw for 24 hours
  • Follow the diet your dentist suggests

While this advice can vary per tooth and situation, patients will be able to continue about their normal day following the extraction. Unless the dentist uses an anesthetic that puts the patient to sleep for the operation, the patient will feel little to no effects from the drug. In the cases where the anesthesia is strong enough, the dentist may recommend that the patient have someone else drive to and from the appointment. This is the common recommendation for a patient who goes through a wisdom tooth extraction.

The wisest of teeth

Wisdom teeth are also known as the third molars and can cause multiple problems for a patient who does not remove them at the right time. “Wisdom teeth that aren’t in the right position can allow food to become trapped,” mouthhealthy.org states. When bacteria become trapped, it can lead to infection and cavities.

If there is not enough room for the wisdom teeth to grow properly then it is, “thought by some to crowd or damage neighboring teeth.” If the wisdom teeth can grow in properly, then the patient may not have to get a wisdom tooth extraction and live with the third molars for life. However, the wisdom teeth can even cause discomfort with one’s bite, making basic functions difficult. When this occurs, wisdom tooth extractions are necessary for the patient to lead a comfortable and normal lifestyle.

Mouthhealthy.org lists other reasons why a patient may need to have the wisdom teeth removed, including:

  • Pain
  • Infection
  • Cysts
  • Tumors
  • Damage to neighboring teeth
  • Gum disease
  • Tooth decay

During a wisdom tooth procedure, the patient will typically be completely asleep and wake up once the procedure is over. For anyone who experiences dental anxiety over tooth extractions or the removal of wisdom teeth, the patient can speak to the dentist. The dentist will not only go over the procedure but can also discuss options to help deal with the anxiety. Too often, people attempt to avoid tooth extractions, only increasing the risk for extensive dental damage.

If you or a loved one is possibly in need of tooth extractions of any kind, seek a dentist’s opinion first before acting. If the tooth remains in the socket, it will only cause more pain for the patient. Call our office to schedule an appointment.
